Conservation Tip - October 2009

“Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.”

This quote from Rachel Carson should look familiar if you have seen the “Our Future” sign near the front gate of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. This quote is the underlying theme of this month’s conservation tip.

Many people feel relaxed when interacting and connecting with nature. Some think that we are not fully complete unless we interact and connect with nature in a sustainable way.

Nature is a mother to us all and is the greatest teacher. Like a good mother, she comforts and heals us in times of need but will also reprimand us if we overstep our bounds. The question is: how do we reconnect with nature when we are embedded in a stressful and frenetic-paced society? Here is one remedy that may work for you.

We are currently in October, and we have excellent cooler weather for great outdoor activities. Right now is the time to go outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of Connecticut. Go hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, camping, birding or whatever other outdoor recreational activities you can think of.

The really great part about outdoor activities is that many of these are FREE or inexpensive. Fishing is a great way to spend time with your family. You might even catch an excellent meal. Check out the CT D.E.P.’s website at www.ct.gov/dep for more details on great state parks and fishing licenses.

For many folks, a favorite autumn pastime is hiking, where you can enjoy the scenery and sometimes come across wonderful wildlife such as beautiful birds, remarkable reptiles and awesome arthropods.

Even after many years of living in CT, you may still be amazed by what you discover and remain impressed by the fall foliage we have right here in our own state.

The great thing about nature is that it is there for each and all. Now, let’s go outside and enjoy the wilds of Connecticut and beyond!
