Free Programs Excite the Whole Family This Summer at the Zoo!

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - June 20, 2011 - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, the state's only Zoo, has released its UPDATED summer 2011 programming calendar. The Zoo plans fun and educational special events and programs all summer long, most of which are free with the purchase of Zoo admission. Be sure to mark your calendar, so you won't miss a minute of the excitement.

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is closer than you think and is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Adult admission (ages 12 & older) is $12.00, children (ages 3 -11) and senior admission (62 and older) is just $10.00, and children under 3 years old are free. Zoo members also are admitted free. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! June 20 - July 2: Family Favorite Chris Rowlands LIVE, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM daily

Famous for getting everyone involved, Rowlands brings animals to life through kid-friendly songs, dance, puppets, and colorful props. Chris creatively blends music, comedy, and education to create fast paced, interactive shows that teach and inspire young people. Children are invited to wear fun hats and sing along with Rowlands on stage as he shares his self- penned songs about animals and their environment. Shows are free with paid admission to the Zoo. All shows will be 30-35 minutes long.

June 25: Trumbull Day, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is proud to invite ALL Trumbull residents to come to the Zoo for a reduced admission fee of just $5 with proper I.D. Meet and greet with town officials, business and civic leaders, friends, and neighbors during a fun filled day to please the whole family. June 25: Animal Enrichment Day, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Animal Enrichment Day gives visitors an opportunity to learn about how Zoo staff enriches the mental and physical well-being of our animals. Join us for talks, demonstrations, and a display of enrichment items used at the Zoo. We also will offer raffles to do a hands-on enrichment activity for selected Zoo animals later that day! The drawing will take place at 2:30 PM and winners must be present to win. 

June 29: Evening Lecture Series: Cheetah Outreach, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

April Davis of Cheetah Outreach will explore the organization's unique approach to predator conservation, enrichment program, and nutrition research of cheetahs in Africa. There is a $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served. This lecture, taking place in the Hanson Exploration Station, is part of the Evening Lecture Series, sponsored by Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Volunteer Association.

JUST ADDED! July 2: The ZOOMOBILE Hits the Beach! 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is traveling to Sherwood Island State Park for some "fun in the sun" as Zoo educators present Remarkable Reptiles: In a Class by Themselves! Presented in conjunction with the Sherwood Island State Park Nature Center, these live animal programs will explore the little-known world of these prehistoric survivors and introduce families to beautiful and endangered reptiles from around the world. Presented beachside (weather permitting) or in the Park's new nature center, the programs are sure to educate, engage, and inspire! NEW! July 8: Identifying and Managing Organic Invasive Plants, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM (Rain date 7/15/11)

Come hear about plant identification, biological controls of invasives with beneficial insects, and learn through a demonstration of organic techniques. Topics will include physical, thermal, biological, and managerial methods, identifying areas in need of invasive removal, site analysis, and creating appropriate management plans. Be sure to wear work gear and bring gloves! The workshop will feature Dr. Charlotte Pyle, landscape ecologist; Donna Ellis, a Senior Extension Educator from UCONN; and Michael Nadeau, of Plantscapes, Inc. Price: For AOLCPs and/or NOFA members is $185 per person. For AOLCPs who register by June 24th - $150 per person. General public fee is $200 per person. Lunch included. UPDATED - NEW DATE! July 9: Kids & Kritters: Wild Inspirations Art Opening, 9:30 - 10:30 AM

The Fairfield Arts Center,The Cardinal Shehan Center, and Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo will present Kids & Kritters: Wild Inspirations, an art exhibit featuring 28 original works by the talented children of The Cardinal Shehan Center and local "Pigcassos" and "Van Gophers" from Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo. This opening reception with the human and animal artists is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by calling the Education Department at 203-394-6563. Exhibit will be on display through Labor Day, September 5.

JUST ADDED! July 9 - 15: Toucans/Two Can Days at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo will host Toucans/Two Can Days in partnership with local food banks to help feed hungry families in the greater Bridgeport region. Two can visit for the price of one with a donation of two cans of non-perishable food. This promotion applies to general admission rates only and may not be combined with other offers. Donation bins will be located by the Zoo's ticket booth.

Zoo Patrol 
July 11-15, 18-22, 25-29: Zoo Patrol, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Zoo Patrol is an exciting summer activities program offered for children. Situated on Zoo grounds, children participate in talks and activities with Zoo staff, play animal-related games, and participate in arts and crafts. Each day's activities vary and may include preparing an animal enrichment item, nature walks, and getting a glimpse behind the scenes. Sessions run Monday through Friday. Each week is $130/child for Zoo members and $150/child for non-members. Week one is for children ages 6 - 8; week two is for children ages 9 - 11; week three is for children ages 12 - 14. Connecticut Free Shakespeare celebrates another extraordinary summer at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo by presenting "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas. Performance begins at 8:00 PM, Zoo opens for picnics at 6:30 PM. All shows at the Peacock Pavilion. Show cancels if inclement weather. FREE. July 20: Evening Lecture Series: South African Adventure, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Experience the wildlife of South Africa up close through the footage of rhinos, elephants, giraffes, lions, sea turtles, dolphins, and great white sharks filmed by Michael Sanders. Sanders worked as a wildlife videographer for the Eastern Cape Parks Board and will share his experiences during this lively presentation. There is a $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served. This lecture, taking place in the Hanson Exploration Station, is part of the Evening Lecture Series, sponsored by Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Volunteer Association.

August 20: Teddy Bear Fest, 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Bring your favorite teddy bear friend to the Zoo! This "beary" fun day also will feature children's crafts and storytelling focusing on Bear Awareness and the facts about real bears. FREE admission for children under age 12 who bring their teddy bear to the "Teddy Bear Clinic" and are accompanied by a paying adult.
