BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - September 15, 2011 - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, the state's only zoo, is pleased to announce it has been awarded a grant for $23,300 from Fairfield County Community Foundation. The grant will provide general operating support to offset the rising costs of Zoo operations and assists Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo in its continuing efforts to remain one of the most popular family attractions in the state.

"Thanks to the Fairfield County Community Foundation, valuable community resources like the Zoo are able to continue operating," stated Gregg Dancho, Zoo director. "With this support, the Zoo can continue to offer affordable family fun while also providing very important conservation programs and educational opportunities for individuals of all ages."

"The Fairfield County Community Foundation is pleased to once again support Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo with this general operating grant. We consider the Zoo an anchor institution in Bridgeport and the region. This new grant will strengthen the Zoo's fundraising and marketing efforts, which is critical during this challenging economy," stated Karen R. Brown, the Foundation's Vice President of Programs.

The Foundation's general operating grant will fund ongoing fundraising, public relations, and marketing initiatives designed to increase the Zoo's visibility and expand upon its partnership with the Fairfield County corporate community. Additionally, the grant will provide the organization with opportunities to work on leadership development goals for both senior staff and the board of directors. Providing these capacity building resources to the staff and board to expand their knowledge base will increase the organization's efficiency, community engagement, and growth.
