Brighten up your Spring at the Zoo!

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - March 1, 2011 - Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is pleased to release its calendar for April and May 2011, which includes exciting hands on programs for children of all ages. The Zoo has fun events for the entire family all year round, most of which are free with the cost of admission.

Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is closer than you think and open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Adult admission (ages 12 & older) is $11.00, children (ages 3 -11) and senior admission (62 and older) is just $9.00, and children under 3 years old are free. Zoo members also are admitted free. Parking at the Zoo is free of charge.

April 2011

* April 12 & 13, Zoo Tots, 10:30 am
This monthly 45-minute program for children 18 months to three years, who are accompanied by an adult, may include stories, games, activities, crafts, and live animals. This session, entitled “Hot and Cold” will focus on different habitats. The cost is $10 for Zoo members and one child, and $15 for non-members and one child. To reserve a space in the program, pre-register by calling the Zoo's Education Department at 203-394-6563.

* April 16 – 17, Party for the Planet, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Join Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo to celebrate the 41st anniversary of Earth Day! Our Earth Day event is about encouraging local, organic, earth-friendly choices as a way of promoting better health for our planet and ourselves. Environmentally friendly vendors will be on hand with everything from green cleaning products and recycled fashion accessories to better lawn care for you and wildlife! We'll have live music performed by The Mudpuppies Saturday at Noon and by The Environmental Hootenanny with Tom Calliman and Ann Shapiro on Sunday at 2 pm. Both performances are at the Peacock Pavilion. Come learn what you can do to make the planet a healthier place for you and your family.

* April 18 – 22, Backyard Beasts, 1:00 pm
These interactive 45-minute programs may include a live animal, animal stories and facts as well as a craft in Professor Beardsley's Research Station. Appropriate for pre-K and elementary age children and their families. Free with the purchase of Zoo admission.

* April 19, 20 & 21, April Adventures, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm
Children ages 6-11 can take part in this program, which may include Zookeeper talks, behind-the-scenes tours, animal encounters, crafts, games, and other activities. Come all three days or just one day. The cost of the program is $30 per day for Zoo members and $35 per day for non-members. Call 203-394-6563 to register.

* April 20, Evening Lecture Series: African Adventures – The Return of the Giant Sable Antelope, 7:00 pm
This lecture will feature John Frederick Walker leading a talk on "Antelope from the Ashes - the dramatic rescue of the Angolan Giant Sable Antelope." There is a $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served. This lecture, taking place in the Hanson Exploration Station, is part of the Evening Lecture Series, sponsored by Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Volunteer Association.

May 2011

* May 7, Spring Fling, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Visit the Zoo for a day filled with fun, hands-on programming for the entire family in the Barnyard. There also will be crafts and exciting animal encounters.

* May 7, Dinosaur Day, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Enjoy a day of dinosaurs at the Zoo. Staff from Dinosaur State Park, The Dinosaur Place and Peabody Museum will bring information and artifacts on these pre historic creatures. Meet Dilly the Dinosaur and make a craft!

* May 8, Mother's Day
Show Mom just how much you care by taking her to the Zoo this Mother’s Day. To show our appreciation for all that she does, moms will be admitted free!

* May 10 & 11, Zoo Tots, 10:30 am

* May 14, Pet Awareness and Adoption Day, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Join the Zoo for our 2nd annual Animal Adoption Day. Together with several animal adoption and rescue organizations, you’ll learn about the wonderful animals we live with every day - our pets! We’ll have presentations on pet care and safety, crafts for the kids and other surprises. Canine search and rescue demonstrations will take place on “Training the Canine Hero.” Take part and learn about caring for your family's best friend.

* May 18, Evening Lecture Series: Ocelots of Panama, 7:00 pm
This lecture will feature Dr. Jacalyn Giacalone Willis, sharing her findings on ocelots and other mammals in Panama along with fascinating, beautiful photos of this elusive cat. There is a $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served. This lecture, taking place in the Hanson Exploration Station, is part of the Evening Lecture Series, sponsored by Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Volunteer Association.

* May 28 – 29, Farming Fever, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Join us for an afternoon of learning about farm animals and farming with former Connecticut resident Chris Rowlands, an entertainer who’s famous for getting everyone involved. Children are invited to wear fun hats and sing along with Rowlands on stage as he shares his self- penned songs such as "Cud Chewing," a tribute to cows. Presented in partnership with the Fairfield County Farm Bureau.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR SUMMER!
Our "Zoo Patrol" summer program for kids is NOW open for registration! Sessions will run July 11 through August 12. This is a fun, interactive program for kids ages 6 - 14 that may involve Zoo keeper talks, behind the scenes tours, animal related activities, and inventive crafts! Zoo Patrol runs from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Children can sign up for a full week of entertaining and educational activities. We offer different weeks for ages 6-8, 9-11, and 12-14. Please call the Zoo's Education Department at 203-394-6563 to request more information and for registration forms.
