Earth Day Being Celebrated April 21 and 22

3/26/2007

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo will celebrate the 37th annual Earth Day with a weekend environmental extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both April 21 and April 22. The Zoo is located at 1875 Noble Ave., in Bridgeport. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children 3-11 and seniors. For more information, call 203-394-6565 or visit beardsleyzoo.org.

The Zoo kicks off the weekend celebration at 11 a.m. on Saturday with a free presentation by Connecticut environmentalist Colin Bennett of Clean Water Action in Hartford. Bennett will discuss “Climate Change and its Effects on Wildlife.” Bennett is one of a group of specially selected environmental leaders selected by former Vice President Al Gore to give his "Inconvenient Truth" presentation to groups around the country. This is the presentation at the heart of Gore's award winning film, An Inconvenient Truth. The Zoo will have an Earth Day storytime and craft session for children whose parents are watching the presentation.

From noon to 3 p.m., Zoo vistors can enjoy a variety of earth- friendly activities and presentations, including an alternative energy display with working wind turbine, solar cell and fuel cell. Children will enjoy making environmentally-friendly crafts and learning more about being a “green” kid during storytime. Earth-friendly vendors will showcase a great variety of “green” products.

On Sunday, the Zoo is teaming with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s (AZA) Party for the Planet, which will take place at more than 100 Zoos across the country. AZA is providing temporary tattoos and native northeast wildflower seed packets for distribution to Zoo visitors. Other activities include an alternative energy display, a search for local fauna during the Backyard Scavenger Hunt, a Supermarket Sweep- style game where children and adults will enjoy learning how to make earth-friendly choices while shopping, environmentally- friendly crafts, storytime, and earth-friendly vendors.

The highlight of the day will be Tom Callinan’s Environmental Hootenanny musical performance at 1 p.m. Callinan has developed an environmental hootenanny, containing participatory songs and stories about human interaction with the natural world. The celebrated folksinger, songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, and activist provides an alternative to "hard news" with lighthearted, singable, thought-provoking songs, stories, and activities that celebrate nature, as well as those that concentrate on specific environmental issues: recycling, sewage, solid waste, litter, rainforest preservation, critical habitat, saving whales, marine environment (including Long Island Sound), soil conservation, coral reefs, rivers, among others.
