Professor Beardsley’s Workshops
|
We offer exciting hands-on workshops at the Zoo featuring a lecture and a lab component. These programs combine natural history, interactivity and inquiry-based learning. Your students will really enjoy “doing science” at the Zoo!
Animal Tracks and Signs
Lecture: Students will learn how to identify animal signs (scat, scratches, scent marks) and tracks. They will also learn how to read the story told by these signs and tracks.
Lab: Students will venture out on Zoo grounds to identify signs and tracks from common Connecticut critters. Track sightings guaranteed! Students will also make their own plaster track imprint to keep.
Raptors!
Lecture: Students will learn the characteristics common to all raptors as well as the differences between hawks, falcons and owls. They will also get to meet some raptors up close!
Lab: Students will dissect owl pellets, learn why scientists study them and identify the bones of the prey regurgitated by the owls.
Behavioral Enrichment
Lecture: Students will learn how Zookeepers use enrichment to promote the physical and psychological health of Zoo animals. They will also learn how enrichment makes animal care and medical procedures less stressful and safer. Students will try behavioral shaping on each other!
Lab: Students will make several enrichment items and complete observation sheets of Zoo animals using the items.
Wetland Study
Lecture: Students will learn what a wetland is, what flora and fauna are found there, why wetlands are so important to humans as well as other animals, and how scientists monitor the health of waterways.
Lab: (seasonal) Students will explore a wetland site on park grounds as they perform water quality testing, identify insect larvae and take water samples. They will bring these samples back to the lab to view on our video microscope.
Workshop Fees:
| $75 |
45 minute lecture only plus zoo admission fees |
| $150 |
