Zoo Tour: Animal Care Center

The Zoo’s Animal Care Center opened in the spring of 1997 and is a specially designed medical facility dedicated to the needs of the Zoo’s own animal collection. New animals being brought into the Zoo are housed first at the Center as they go through a period of quarantine and are allowed to settle in after the possible stress of transport. Pregnant animals may be brought to the Center to provide the mother with a quiet isolated area in which to give birth. Animals with more specific medical needs can be brought to the Center for X-rays, ultrasounds, and many other medical techniques used by Zoo veterinarians. The Center features a laboratory, pharmacy, X-ray room, treatment room, surgical theater, recovery room, kitchen, laundry, and 5 animal holding areas. Animals with such varying needs as a tiger, a llama, a parrot or a poison dart frog can all be held and cared for in this modern medical facility.

While not open to the general public, the Animal Care Center serves as a unique educational setting for the Zoo’s veterinarian and animal care interns.
