Zoo Maintenance
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has a proud history of over 100 years as Connecticut’s only Zoo and is committed to the preservation of endangered animals.
We are currently seeking a full time Maintenance position that is skilled in performing various maintenance tasks on Zoo buildings and grounds. This position also requires an understanding of the Zoo goal, to help people of all ages understand and respect nature and conservation.
The Zoo is open to the public 362 days a year. In this position the incumbent must be willing to work weekends and holidays as needed and can work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions – days and hours are subject to change.

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are also required to stand, walk, climb ladders and drive utility vehicles. They must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Exposure to outside climate on a regular basis.

Job Responsibilities
- Performance of manual and skilled work consisting of conducting various tasks associated with the care and maintenance of the buildings, grounds, and facilities of the zoo and to ensure that infrastructure systems are properly operating through the use of acceptable maintenance and repair procedures.
- The maintenance worker will use their own initiative and motivation to carry out assigned tasks and must be able to work without direct supervision.
- This individual shall work under the direction of the General Curator.
- Must have the ability to work harmoniously with the public, volunteers, and fellow employees in an enthusiastic and cooperative manner.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and have sufficient aptitude and common sense to carry out detailed but uninvolved oral and written instructions.
- Must have the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
- Requires the ability to make routine independent judgments in the absence of a supervisor.
- Must have the ability to provide the best possible image of the Zoo so that the public respects and appreciates the Zoo, its facilities, and programs.
- Computer skills including the understanding of energy management systems.
Essential Functions (Including but not limited to:)
- Checks buildings, support facilities and infrastructure for areas of weathering, deterioration, vandalism, and other damage caused by natural elements and makes repairs as needed. Provides maintenance and repairs in exhibits, public and staff areas on the property to maintain a clean and orderly appearance.
- Make sure that facilities, such as restrooms, are in a clean and in proper working order.
- Remove trash and recycling materials and place them in their proper receptacles.
- Occasional assist horticulture staff with maintaining the grounds i.e., leave pickup and lawn care.
- Must be able to work with volunteers, help with maintenance and doing group projects on zoo grounds.
- Will arrange and coordinate inspection of facilities, grounds, and vehicles for preventive maintenance. Reports findings to the Curator and Zoo Director.
- Will interface with city and outside personnel to facilitate repairs to equipment and buildings.
- Will perform minor carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, and electrical repairs, as needed.
- Duties include maintaining inventory, ordering, and picking up needed supplies from vendors.
- Will participate in routine safety audits of buildings and facilities and report findings to the General Curator and Zoo Director.
- Working knowledge of machinery including but not limited to skid steers, lawn equipment, backhoes, mini loaders, and snow removing equipment.
- Communication is vital between all Zoo Staff. Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors both orally and in writing. Responsible for filing weekly reports on activities in their area.
- Manual labor includes moving feed bags, meat boxes, and the removal of unwanted items from grounds and exhibits and other required tasks.
- Respond to questions from the public concerning Zoo operation.
- Meet with Zoo management personnel to review goals and objectives.
- Operate and perform daily and as needed maintenance of a working carousel.
The ideal candidate will possess a combination of skills, experience, and passion in the following areas.
- HS Diploma or equivalent.
- A valid drivers license.
- At least 2 years of working experience in a similar capacity.
- Background knowledge and experience in basic landscaping, and construction.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.
