Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Honored with Prestigious AZA Accreditation and Two Education Awards9/25/2024
 Bridgeport, CT –Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is proud to announce that it has received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) independent Accreditation Commission at this year’s Annual Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. While attending the annual conference, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo won two competitive AZA Education Awards.
Twice a year, the AZA Commission reviews accreditation applications from top zoos, aquariums, and related facilities worldwide. At this year’s Annual Conference, 33 facilities earned accreditation. The process includes a detailed application, a multi-day inspection by an independent team, and thorough evaluations of animal care, safety, education, conservation, and more. After reviewing inspection reports, the Commission interviews facility officials before granting, provisionally granting, or denying accreditation. AZA facilities must complete this process every five years as part of their membership requirements.  Bridgeport, CT – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a baby Giant Anteater on August 27th. This occasion marks the fourth time this threatened species has been born at the zoo, a significant milestone in the zoo’s conservation efforts.

The female, Pana, and the male, EO, were born in 2009 and just had their fourth baby together at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo! The baby and mother are in excellent condition. Weighing 1.8 kilograms (3.96 pounds) at its first exam, the baby anteater was born with fur matching its mother, Pana, making them appear as one to help with camouflage. September 14, Red Wolf Day The American red wolf is the rarest wild animal in the US and the most endangered wolf in our nation and the world. Red wolves have the incredible power to shape the landscape in a way that benefits plants, animals, and people. Their presence has a domino effect on their surroundings, leading to a balanced ecosystem. On September 14, Zoo Educators will be on site at our Red Wolf Exhibit, to share artifacts and to discuss this highly endangered species from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.  (BRIDGEPORT, CT) – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo invites members of the public to the fifth annual Zoo Gala on Saturday, October 19 at the Inn at Longshore in Westport, Connecticut. The Gala promises an extraordinary evening of elegance, entertainment, and excitement in support of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. This year’s gala is set to soar to new heights with the breathtaking SkyHunters in Flight as the keynote entertainment, the return of the highly anticipated VIP Hour, and special guest emcee, Ashley Baylor of WTNH.
Ashley Baylor, a beloved meteorologist with nearly 18 years of experience and a passionate advocate for animal welfare, will be guiding the evening’s festivities. Baylor shared her excitement, saying, "I'm a frequent visitor of the Beardsley Zoo. It's one of my favorite places in Connecticut. Walking around, seeing the exhibits with my daughter brings me a sense of serenity. I can't think of anything better than enjoying the outdoors while learning about exotic and native animals. I'm honored to emcee this upcoming gala, which will benefit this Connecticut landmark."  (BRIDGEPORT, CT) – It's official—the GLOW Wild Lantern Festival Presented by ASML is returning to Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo for its third year! Tickets are now available for this illuminating event which will run from September 26th through December 15th, on Thursday through Sunday evenings. This vibrant festival will light up the Zoo grounds, with all new lanterns this year. Guests of all ages will be amazed by over 50 large-scale illuminated sculptures and interactive displays.
