BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – February 5, 2024 – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo’s popular summer children’s program, Zoo Patrol, is back for 2024. Registration is open for seven week-long sessions covering dates from July 1 through August 16. There are three sessions for children ages 7-10, and three sessions for children ages 11-13. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo’s Prairie Dog Forecaster Says Spring is Coming BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – February 2, 2023 - No need for Phil from distant lands, Connecticut's own seer understands. Beardsley Bart, Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo’s Prognosticating Prairie Dog shared his weather forecast with a small gathering of his friends early this morning. Attendees included Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim who read the proclamation. Mayor Ganim shared, “Beardsley Bart has spoken, and spring is coming to Bridgeport!” He emphasized the impact Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has on the community. “Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is the only zoo in the state, and we are proud to have such a great resource right here in Bridgeport.” BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – January 30, 2024 – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo invites residents to become Citizen-Scientist volunteers and participate in a “FrogWatch” census in area wetlands. In a collaboration between the Zoo, The Maritime Aquarium, and Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History, volunteers will make regular visits to wetlands in their neighborhoods and keep a frog log to record the frog and toad calls they hear. Working with experts, volunteers will learn about local frog species, then visit wetlands once or twice a week for about 15 minutes each night this spring and summer. Tahu the River Otter to Take Oath of Office BRIDGEPORT, Conn. –December 4, 2023–-Tahu the North American river otter will officially take on the duties and responsibilities of Mayor of the Zoo on Tuesday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the Zoo’s otter habitat. The Swearing-In Ceremony will be conducted by Zoo Director Gregg Dancho, with the Oath of Office administered by Connecticut Zoological Society President Charles Dumais and witnessed by Zoo staff and friends. After taking the official oath of office, Tahu will immediately get into the swim of things. BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – November 30, 2023– Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is the new home for a white-naped crane (Antigone vipio). The four-year-old male crane, named Khing, arrived from the Akron Zoo in Ohio and can be found in the large grassy habitat located next to the Natt Family Red Panda Habitat. He is a companion for the Zoo’s three-year-old female white-naped crane, Cora. White-naped cranes are an elegant species native to northern Mongolia, southern Siberia, Korea, Japan and central China. A large bird that grows to four feet tall or more, they have a white nape and vertical gray stripes on their necks, as well as a distinct red patch surrounding their eyes. They are found in grassy marshes, wet sedge meadows and reedbeds in broad river valleys, lake depressions and boggy upland wetlands. They prefer areas where their nests can be concealed and there is little grazing pressure. |
