INAUGURATION CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 5THBRIDGEPORT, CT. – November 9, 2024 – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is excited to announce that Berry the Red Panda has been elected as the Zoo’s new Mayor! Berry’s campaign, with the slogan “Let’s Make Paws-itive Change Together,” inspired voters with her commitment to balance, resilience, and a vision for growth and unity within the Zoo. This year’s close race saw fierce competition among six animal candidates, but Berry captured the most votes, making her the official ambassador and leader for the Zoo’s mission in conservation, education, and community engagement. In a special event, Berry’s inauguration will take place on Thursday, December 5th, at 10:00 am at the Natt Family Red Panda Habitat. Zoo supporters, fans, and the public are invited to witness Berry’s swearing-in and to celebrate with the new Mayor as she embarks on her year-long term. “Every candidate brought something special to this year’s election, making it one of our most spirited yet, that really captured the public’s heart” said Jim Wharton, CEO of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. “We’re thrilled to see Berry take the reins with her enthusiasm, and we’re confident her term will bring great things to the Zoo community.”
Berry ran against a lineup of impressive contenders: Dumbledore the Yellow-Banded Poison Dart Frog, Post Makoi the Koi Fish, Willow the Eastern Mud Turtle, Nuna the Andean Bear, and Ethel the Guinea Hog. All funds raised through the election will directly support the Zoo’s ongoing efforts in conservation, research, education, and public enrichment. As the second-place winner, Post Makoi will serve as Deputy Mayor and will step in if Berry is unable to fulfill her duties through the duration of her term. Join us in celebrating Berry’s leadership and the beginning of her “paws-itive” journey as Mayor of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo!
