Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Arboretum
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Arboretum in Bridgeport has been awarded a Level 1 Accreditation by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum, for achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program is the only global initiative to officially recognize arboreta at various levels of development, capacity, and professionalism. Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Arboretum is also now recognized as an accredited arboretum in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of the world’s arboreta and gardens dedicated to woody plants.
The Zoo is committed to the preservation of endangered animals and are actively developing strategies that will protect species and preserve their wild habitats. Plantings in the Arboretum reflect a goal of building collections for wildlife value as well as aesthetic appreciation, with sustainable maintenance and ecological awareness as guiding principles in what we do.

Benefits of Trees
Most trees and shrubs in cities or communities are planted to provide beauty or shade; these are two excellent reasons for their use. Woody plants also serve many other purposes.
Social Benefits:
Social Benefits:
- Most of us respond to the presence of trees beyond simply their beauty. We feel serene, peaceful, restful, and tranquil in a grove of trees. The strong ties between people and trees is most evident in the resistance of community residents to removing trees to widen streets.
- With the proper selection and maintenance, trees can enhance and function on one property without infringing on the rights and privileges of neighbors. Trees bring natural elements and wildlife habitats to urban surroundings, all which increase the quality of life of residents of the community.
- Trees alter the environment by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water, and harboring wildlife. Trees also deflect and influence wind, snow, rain, and hail, which provides some protection for people, pets, and buildings. Trees also intercept water and reduce storm runoff and the possibility of flooding.
- Direct economic benefits are usually associated with energy costs; for example, air-conditioning costs are lower in a tree-shaded home and heating costs are lowered when the house has a windbreak.
- Indirect economic benefits are even greater; being associated with large community savings in fewer use of utility services like wastewater treatment plant.
