Scientific Name: Anas platyrhynchos domesticus
Physical Description: A subspecies of the Mallard that was domesticated by humans, the Indian Runner Duck was selected for its upright posture and ability to run long distances between fields for pest control1. It is not however capable of flight. They exhibit a wide range of colors, from browns and tans, to white, blue and mallard. Males grow up to 32 inches and 4.4 pounds, while females grow up to 28 inches and 4.1 pounds.
Habitat: A domesticated duck, they are used in gardens and fields for pest control such as rice paddies.
Range: They are native to southeast Asia2.
Diet: They eat grass, duckweed, slugs, snails, worms, insects.
Lifespan: They live 5-10 years on average in the wild.
Social Structure: A social animal, the Indian Runner Duck lives and grows in flocks.
Status: As a domesticated species, they are not assessed by the IUCN Red List.
