Common Name: Yellow-banded Poison Dart Frog
Scientific Name: Dendrobates leucomelas[1]
Physical Description: The Yellow-banded Poison Dart Frog has a black body with yellow bands around it, each band then marked with black dots. They are 1.5 – 2 inches in length on average and only weigh 3 grams[2]. They lack webbed feet, and instead have feet suited for climbing up trunks of trees, with adhesive properties.
Habitat: The Yellow-banded Poison Dart Frog lives in the rainforests of northern South America. They require access to wetlands and humid environments for reproduction and to protect their skin, as they breathe via subcutaneous respiration, or breathe through their skin.
Range: Guiana Highlands, South America
Diet: Insects
Life Span: 5-7 years in the wild, 10-15 years in captvity
Social Structure: Yellow-banded Poison Dart Frogs produce a unique call during the mating season so the male can attract a female mate. They can amplify this sound with the use of vocal sacs and their buccal cavity.
Status: Least Concern
Other: This species is sometimes referred to as the Bumblebee Poison Dart Frog due to their bright yellow and black striping!
