Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Mourns  the Loss of Red Panda Rochan

2/25/2022

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Feb 25, 2022 – The family at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is saddened to announce the passing of Rochan, a seven-year-old male red panda, on February 17, 2022. Rochan was being monitored and treated for a health condition affecting his ability to walk. Upon completion of an MRI to investigate Rochan’s increasing difficulty, lesions on his spine were identified, further compromising his mobility. The difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him based on quality-of-life considerations.

Eagle Scout Project Bridges a Gap in the  New England Farmyard at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Feb 24, 2022 – The New England Farmyard at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has a new covered bridge over the duck pond, thanks to Trumbull Eagle Scout Luke Strong. A junior at Trumbull High School, Strong has been coming to the Zoo since he was a small child, and he explained that he was looking for a way to give something back to the place he loved. With a future career in mind as an architect, he envisioned a covered bridge over the waterway that’s home to a large variety of ducks and geese. “I thought it would be a good challenge,” he said, planning the bridge as his Eagle Scout Service Project.

Zoo-Per Bowl! River Otters at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Pick Super Bowl Winner

2/9/2022

Prognostic-otters Choose the Rams!

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – February 10, 2022 – Football team loyalties can sink the closest relationships, especially when support for either the Cincinnati Bengals or Los Angeles Rams has friends and family members on opposing sides. Human sports experts have made their own predictions, but if you’re still undecided about which team to support, get in the swim with the North American river otters at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo!

Watch as river otters Sedge and Tahu help you decide which team you “otter” support. Animals have a proud history of picking Super Bowl winners. The Cincinnati Zoo’s beloved hippo Fiona has chosen the Bengals as the game’s winner.  Other animal bet makers have included tortoises, porcupines, pandas, tigers, and seals, among others.

Zoo Director Gregg Dancho is going whole hog on the Rams prediction. He counsels against counting your chickens before they’re hatched, but he’s not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. “I know Sedge and Tahu wouldn’t lead me on a wild goose chase,” he said. “On Sunday, I’ll be watching the game like a hawk.”
